Trump proposed that Canada become the 51st state of the United States: Media reveals how Trudeau reacted
US President-elect Donald Trump has said that Canada "should become the 51st state" of America if Washington's 25% trade tariffs "kill" the Canadian economy. He said this in a conversation with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to which he and others present at the meeting "laughed nervously."
This is what Fox News reported, citing its own sources who heard the discussion between the two politicians. According to them, on November 29, the Canadian prime minister flew "unannounced" to the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
This happened after the Republican publicly threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on trade with Canada and Mexico due to the alleged inability of these countries to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States. The interlocutors recall that Trump, despite his ostentatious cordiality and hospitality, was very direct when it came to what he wanted from the Canadian prime minister.
In particular, he said that Canada is not doing a good job of securing the US border, "letting a lot of drugs and people through," such as illegal immigrants from more than 70 countries. Trump also talked about the trade deficit with the neighboring country, which he estimates at more than $100 billion.
"If Canada fails to solve its border problems and eliminate its deficit, he will impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods on the first day after his inauguration in January 2025. Trudeau responded by saying that such a measure would "completely kill the Canadian economy." Trump added: "so your country can't survive if it doesn't rip off the United States to the tune of $100 billion?", Fox News reports.
According to the publication's sources, Trump then directly suggested that Trudeau make Canada the 51st state of the United States, to which he and others present at the meeting "laughed nervously." However, the Republican continued to develop the idea and said that the Canadian prime minister would allegedly be able to "become the governor" of this state. Moreover, if he is unable to fulfill Trump's list of demands (without infringing on US interests in trade), then, according to the Republican, Canada should really become a state or two, and Trudeau should become the governor.
The Fox News interlocutors summarized that although Trump's proposals caused a lot of laughter among those present at the meeting, he clearly made it clear to Trudeau that he expects changes for the better by January 20, 2025, the day of his inauguration.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the US media write that US President-elect Donald Trump is threatening a trade war with China, Canada, and Mexico. He publicly stated on social media that one of his first decrees after taking office would be to impose additional duties on all goods from these three countries.
