On the morning of April 3, Taiwan was shaken by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake, the strongest in 25 years. As a result of the natural disaster, dozens of buildings in Hualien went underground, and more than 91,000 people across the country lost power. At least 4 people were killed and 97 others were injured.

This was reported by the Taiwan Fire Service, The Guardian reports. According to the Associated Press, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of about 35 km, 18 kilometers south of the city of Hualien.

The moment of destruction of one of the residential buildings was caught on video. The powerful aftershocks caused it to collapse like a house of cards.

Taiwanese officials reported that people are trapped in collapsed buildings in the county, and an important highway along the island's east coast is closed to traffic due to extensive damage caused by landslides and rockfalls.

A total of 26 collapsed buildings have been reported so far, including 15 in Hualien County.

Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration has warned that powerful aftershocks of magnitude 7 are expected by the end of the week.

Earthquakes in Taiwan are a regular occurrence due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which runs around the edge of the Pacific Ocean and causes massive seismic and volcanic activity from Indonesia to Chile. At the same time, the current tremors are the strongest since 1999, when a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck 150 kilometers south of Taipei, killing 2,400 people and injuring another 10,000.
