"The split will not be useful": Italy calls for urgent US-Europe summit on Ukraine

In the coming hours, Italy will propose to its partners to hold an immediate summit with the participation of the United States, European countries and allies. The meeting will focus on jointly overcoming the challenges facing the West, especially the war in Ukraine.

This was stated by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. She was quoted by the Italian edition of RaiNews.

"Any split in the West makes us all weaker and favors those who want to see the decline of our civilization. The decline not of its power or influence, but of the principles on which it was founded, especially freedom. A split will not benefit anyone," Meloni said.

She emphasized that the summit is needed to discuss the major challenges, starting with the war in Ukraine, and those that the West will have to address in the future. Meloni called for a frank conversation.

"An immediate summit is needed between the United States, European powers and allies to talk frankly about how we intend to address today's great challenges, starting with Ukraine, which we have defended together in recent years, and those we will be called upon to address in the future. This is the proposal that Italy intends to make to its partners in the coming hours," Giorgia Meloni said.

As a reminder, on Friday, February 28, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid an official visit to the United States. The main purpose of the visit was to sign a minerals agreement. The President of Ukraine also planned to give a speech at the Hudson Institute.

However, at the public part of the meeting, a dispute broke out between Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance over Washington's soft approach to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's aggression.

Later, Zelenskyy and Trump had a closed-door conversation, but it did not last long.

After tense talks with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy left the White House early. The minerals agreement, as previously announced, was not signed. The joint press conference between Zelenskyy and Trump was also canceled.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, world leaders and American politicians reacted to the events at the White House on February 28, where the Ukrainian and American presidents had a tense meeting. They expressed support for Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainians. So far, representatives of most European countries have spoken out.
