Three countries blocked the purchase of shells for Ukraine outside the EU

The European Union is failing to fulfill its commitment to supply one million rounds of ammunition to the Ukrainian army by March 2024. Therefore, Europe has discussed the possibility of purchasing ammunition outside the bloc as the situation at the front with the supply of ammunition for Ukraine is critical.

However, France, Greece and Cyprus opposed this decision. This was reported by Politico.

Three unnamed diplomatic interlocutors confirmed to the publication that at the last meeting of the EU Political and Security Committee, the possibility of purchasing shells for Ukraine outside the bloc was discussed. The majority of EU member states supported this proposal, given the critical shortage of ammunition that the Ukrainian army is currently suffering from.

However, France, along with Greece and Cyprus, opposed this "emergency measure," arguing that "European arms manufacturers need orders to justify increased production."

At the same time, the newspaper reminds us that at the end of January, a high-ranking French official said that France would not object to purchasing shells outside the EU if the EU failed to provide one million shells for Ukraine by March. According to Politico, Europe will not be able to fulfill this obligation within the stated timeframe.
