Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that his country wants to host NATO nuclear weapons. This will be a response to the Kremlin in view of Russia's intention to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

The head of the Polish government made this statement after the summit in Brussels. It was reported by Polsat News.

"Due to the fact that Russia intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, we ask the entire NATO bloc to participate in the Nuclear Sharing programme," Morawiecki said.

He confirmed that Warsaw is interested in participating in the programme.

"The final decision will depend on our American and NATO partners. We declare our will to act quickly in this matter," the Polish prime minister said.

Morawiecki stressed that "we do not want to sit idly by while Putin is escalating all sorts of threats".

We would like to add that Nuclear Sharing is a NATO programme that is part of the nuclear deterrent. It allows for the provision of nuclear warheads to NATO member states that do not have nuclear weapons of their own. Since November 2009, under the Nuclear Sharing programme, US nuclear weapons have been deployed in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

On 25 May, self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced that nuclear weapons had been moved to the country's territory.

On 16 June, Putin made a similar statement. He revealed that some of Russia's nuclear weapons had already been moved to Belarus.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the Defence Intelligence noted that, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin's statements, as of 20 June, no Russian nuclear warhead had been moved to Belarusian territory.
