Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said that Ukraine is "not suitable for EU membership." Until peace comes to our country, any negotiations on this topic are inappropriate.
The head of the ministry voiced this opinion on his Facebook page. He said that Ukraine has not fulfilled the conditions set for a candidate for membership, so Hungary does not consider its further steps to join the EU appropriate.
The politician emphasized that the war is ongoing, and neither media freedom nor freedom of speech are allegedly respected. Elections are also not being held. Given all the factors, he considers it "absurd" for EU members to express their position on the rule of law in our country.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister also believes that Ukraine is not ready for membership in the organization until peace is established on its territory.
"The war with Ukraine will now enter the EU, which we obviously do not want and cannot want. Enlargement should serve the purpose of spreading peace, not bringing war into the EU," he said.
Szijjártó also added that Hungary expects Ukraine to return "all the rights that it had in 2015" to the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia.
Earlier, Hungary announced that it would block negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU). The country demands fulfillment of a number of conditions, including the rights of the Hungarian minority.
