Israeli army advances into Gaza Strip's Rafah city center – Reuters
On Tuesday, May 28, Israeli tanks advanced into the center of Rafah in the Gaza Strip for the first time. Armored vehicles were spotted near the Al-Awda Mosque, the city's central landmark.
This was reported by Reuters. The Israeli military said it was continuing to operate in the Rafah area, but did not comment on reports of an advance into the city center.
Local residents said that at night the IDF carried out air strikes and tank fire on the city, despite the significant international outcry over the May 26 airstrike on the tent city that killed dozens of Palestinians. Following the attack, world leaders expressed horror at the fire in the designated "humanitarian zone" where entire families were seeking refuge. They called for the implementation of the World Court's order to stop the Israeli attack.
One local resident told reporters: "Tank shells are falling everywhere in Tel al-Sultan. Many families have fled their homes in the western part of Rafah under shelling throughout the night."
The media outlet noted that Israel continues its attacks despite a ruling by the International Court of Justice that ordered it to stop. At the same time, Israel claims that it wants to root out Hamas militants who have taken up residence in Rafah and rescue hostages, who, according to it, are being held in the area.
As reported by OBOZ.UA:
– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the air strike on a tent camp in the Rafah area, which killed dozens of Palestinians, was not intended to cause civilian casualties. According to him, Israel is investigating the incident.
– On May 27, a firefight between Israeli and Egyptian soldiers took place at the Rafah checkpoint on the border of the Gaza Strip and Egypt. An Egyptian border guard was killed in the shooting.
