Israel hits Iran

On the night of October 26, Israel launched strikes against Iran. Several military objects near Tehran were affected, namely missile production plants and air defense systems.

Israel called the attack "a response to months of continuous attacks," while Tehran has already promised a "proportional reaction." Details are reported by the Israeli edition of The Times of Israel.

As of 11:35 a.m., it is known that two soldiers were killed in the attack. Despite this, Iran allegedly has no intention of retaliating against Israel.

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency was among the first to report the Israeli attack: it said that several military bases in the Tehran area, particularly in the western and southern districts of the capital, were hit.

At the same time, Iranian media denied reports of fires or explosions at a key oil refinery south of the capital. Tehran airports also continued to operate as usual.

After a while, Israel's main TV channels reported on the second wave of strikes on Iran. In particular, according to Channel 12, the eastern part of Tehran and the command center of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps came under fire.

AFP correspondents noted that after the new hits, continuous explosions and light trails were visible in the sky in central Tehran. And Reuters quoted local media as saying that four more explosions were heard in eastern Tehran and that "air defense is still active" in the capital.

According to ABC News, the attack is expected to last one night. There were no reports of losses or damage to Israeli military aircraft.

The same Channel 12 reported that the first wave of Israeli air strikes targeted missile and air defense facilities.

Former IDF Chief of Operations Israel Ziv called the Israeli strikes "historic": according to him, Israel has been doing "whatever it wanted" in the skies of Iran for hours, targeting some of its most important military onjects. And the fact that only military targets were struck, according to Ziv, "presents Iran with a dilemma."

The attack and its completion were later confirmed by the IDF. The Israeli military noted, "The IDF completed precise and targeted strikes against military targets in a number of areas in Iran. Our planes have safely returned home."

The strike, the IDF added, was in response to Iran's recent attacks on Israel, with missile production plants being key targets.

"The strike was conducted in response to the attacks by the Iranian regime against the State of Israel and its citizens in recent months. The retaliatory strike has been completed and the mission was fulfilled. Based on intelligence, IAF aircraft struck missile manufacturing facilities used to produce the missiles that Iran fired at the State of Israel over the last year. These missiles posed a direct and immediate threat to the citizens of the State of Israel," the statement said.

The Israeli military also struck Iranian air defense systems, which " intended to restrict Israel's aerial freedom of operation in Iran." And they promised to repeat the attack in case of retaliation from Tehran.

"Iran fired hundreds of missiles directly toward the State of Israel during two attacks in April and October, and funds and directs terrorist activity through its terror proxies throughout the Middle East, in order to attack the State of Israel and its citizens. Alongside Iran's efforts to attack the State of Israel, Iran acts to undermine regional stability and security, and the global economy. The IDF has a range of offensive operational capabilities, some of which were deployed today during the strikes on strategic assets deep within Iranian territory. The State of Israel reserves the right to defend its citizens if the Iranian regime continues attacks against the State of Israel and its civilians. The IDF is conducting ongoing situational assessments and is ready to conduct defensive and offensive action," the statement emphasizes.

Axios notes that Israel's attack on October 26 is the first in history that the Israeli authorities have officially taken responsibility for a military operation in Iran.

Against the backdrop of the nighttime attack, according to The Times of Israel, a telephone conversation took place between US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Galant. However, the source of the newspaper did not report what exactly was discussed and how long it lasted.

Instead, it is known that in the midst of the Israeli attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gathered Israeli officials to assess the security situation.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is conducting an assessment of the security situation at the air force Base in the Kirya (defense ministry) with the defense minister, the army chief, the head of the Mossad and the head of the Shin Bet," Netanyahu's office said.

After the attack, Tehran promised Israel a "proportional reaction" to the overnight strikes.

"There is no doubt that Israel will face a proportionate response to any actions it takes," the Iranian news agency Tasnim quoted the source as saying.

However, Sky News Arabia later reported that Iran told Israel that it did not intend to respond to the attack through international intermediaries.
