"Have you ever said thanks?" CNN counted for Vance how many times Zelenskyy was grateful to the United States
American journalists have counted the number of times President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked Americans and US leaders. This happened against the backdrop of harsh statements by Donald Trump and his Vice President J.D. Vance at the White House about the Ukrainian's "lack of gratitude."
"You have to be grateful. You don't have cards," Trump said in the Oval Office, adding later: "You should be more grateful." This was reported by CNN.
"Have you thanked me for this whole meeting?" Vance asked Zelenskyy.
It is worth noting that Zelenskyy has repeatedly thanked the United States since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, expressing gratitude to President Joe Biden, Trump, members of Congress from both parties, US defense companies and their employees, and the American people.
Even after the Ukrainian president left the White House early on Friday, February 28, he wrote on social media platform X to thank them for the visit, but emphasized the need for a just peace.
Journalists have collected 33 previous examples of Zelenskyy thanking or expressing gratitude to the United States, its officials, or people for their support. This is not a complete list, as many of Zelenskyy's internal statements in Ukrainian were not considered.
In January 2022, the President of Ukraine expressed gratitude to President Biden for unprecedented American diplomatic and military assistance to Ukraine, and in July 2022, he welcomed the historic decision of the United States to provide Ukraine with a new security assistance package that included modern air defense systems and expressed gratitude to the American president for his continued leadership and support of Ukraine in the fight against Russia.
On August 19, 2022, the Ukrainian leader wrote on social media platform X that he highly appreciated the next military aid package worth $775 million and again thanked the US president.
During a meeting with Biden in December 2022, Zelenskyy once again thanked the president himself, the House of Representatives, senators, and ordinary Americans, and in an address to Congress on Christmas Eve, he thanked Americans and high-ranking officials for their invaluable assistance, both military and financial, in supporting Ukraine at this time.
In 2023, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude at a meeting and press conference with Biden, during speeches at the National Archives and the National Defense University, and four more times on social media platform X.
"Today, there is not a single person here who would be indifferent to what is happening to freedom. And there is not a single soul in Ukraine who does not feel grateful to you, America. To you, the people who help us not because you have to, but because your heart does not allow otherwise. Thank you. This is humanity. This is what makes us Ukraine. That's what makes you America," he said at the National Archives in New York.
In 2024, Zelenskyy dedicated more than 10 posts on his social media to the United States, the president, Congress and the American people. He mentioned America during his addresses to Ukrainians, speeches at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, and at a munitions factory in Pennsylvania.
In June and July of the same year, the president met with Biden, where he again expressed his gratitude for the bipartisan support and for the US president's decision, and did not ignore the Americans themselves.
In 2025, Zelenskyy thanked the United States at least twice for its unwavering support of Ukraine's independence and for the vital role it played in uniting the international community. In particular, he did not forget President Trump "for his interest in what we can achieve together."
During this time, the President of Ukraine had hundreds of meetings with American representatives and foreign leaders, spoke at dozens of events, where he repeatedly thanked his partners for supporting our country, including the United States.
As OBOZ.UA reported, on February 28, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United States on an official visit. He spoke with U.S. senators and met with President Donald Trump at the White House.
During a conversation with journalists, Zelenskyy, the American president, and Vice President J.D. Vance had a verbal clash over the war in Ukraine and the importance of the United States in this issue. The Ukrainian leader was accused of being ungrateful, and Trump, when he intervened, urged him not to tell America what to do.
Instead, world leaders supported the Ukrainian president after the tense events in the White House. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was the first to respond, followed by French President Emmanuel Macron, the head of the Spanish government, U.S. senators and other high-ranking officials.
