The EU's attitude towards Georgia will change for the better when the situation in the region "calms down." The main prerequisite for this is the end of the war in Ukraine.

This was stated by the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze following the summit of the European Political Community in the UK, News Georgia reports. He expressed hope that the war in Ukraine will end in a year at the most.

During the summit, Kobakhidze spoke with the top leadership of the European Union: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and Chief Diplomat Josep Borrell.

"My general impression is that as soon as the situation in the region changes globally and calms down, the attitude towards Georgia will change significantly. This process can happen earlier, but a lot will depend on when the political situation in the region calms down," the prime minister told Georgian journalists.

He explained that the main condition for this stabilization of the situation in the region is the end of the war in Ukraine.

As a reminder, relations between Georgia and the EU have deteriorated sharply in recent months, primarily due to the adoption of the controversial law on foreign agents by the Georgian authorities.

Despite the fact that the pro-European President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the law on foreign agents, on May 28, the parliament overrode it and finally approved the document. Parliamentary Speaker Shalva Papuashvili signed the controversial law on June 3.

EU leaders have stated that the actions of the Georgian authorities are leading to a virtual halt in the process of the Caucasian republic's accession to the European Union. This refers to the latest legislative initiatives: the so-called law on foreign agents, and repressions against citizens and activists.

The United States began a comprehensive review of bilateral relations with Georgia. As part of this review, the United States has postponed the NOBLE PARTNER joint military exercises, which were scheduled for July 25-August 6, 2024, indefinitely.
