Former pro-Russian presidential candidate Georgescu detained in Romania: details emerge. Video
On February 26, law enforcement officers detained presidential candidate Călin Georgescu in Romania. It is known that his car was stopped on the road.
This was reported by local media. Later, the politician was sent for questioning to the Prosecutor General's Office.
"Georgescu is accused of 'involvement in an organization with a fascist character' and of falsifying statements about the sources of campaign funding," the media reported.
According to his communications team, the pro-Russian politician planned to run for president again.
"Călin Georgescu was going to re-submit his candidacy for the presidency. About 30 minutes ago, he was stopped on the road and detained for questioning by the Prosecutor General's Office! Where is the democracy, where are the partners who are supposed to defend democracy?" the statement reads.
According to media reports, Georgescu's associate and bodyguard, Horațiu Potra, was also detained. As noted, millions of dollars in cash and weapons were found during a search of his home. The prosecutor's office reported that on February 26 alone, searches were conducted at 47 addresses.
Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning. He is not currently a suspect in the criminal case of illegally approved campaign financing and other violations of electoral law but is only a witness.
