Europe should be part of talks to end Ukraine war - Chinese foreign minister

Olha LipychWorld

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the country supports "all efforts" aimed at organizing peace talks on the "Ukrainian crisis." At the same time, he emphasized that Europe should also participate in possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

The words of the Chinese foreign minister were quoted by the Financial Times on Friday, February 14. He emphasized that European countries should also be involved in this process and play an important role in it.

"China would love to see all its efforts to produce peace, especially if the US gets to a common understanding with Russia. This war is happening on European soil. Europe should play an important role in the process," Wang Yi said.

At the same time, the minister rejected the possibility that Beijing would give up Russian gas to increase pressure on Moscow. According to him, China must first and foremost be guided by the interests of its citizens.

"If China does not buy gas from Russia, which country can meet the needs of the Chinese people with enough gas? We must be responsible to our people.," he said.

The press service of the Chinese Foreign Ministry also reported that Wang Yi shared his views on the "Ukrainian crisis" during a meeting with his British counterpart David Lammy in London.

He noted that Beijing has always adhered to the "four commitments" put forward by President Xi Jinping as a basic guideline and called for no more "expansion of the battlefields, escalation of hostilities, and fanning flames."

"China welcomes all efforts aimed at promoting peace talks and supports the establishment of a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security framework to ultimately achieve lasting peace and stability in Europe," he said.

The minister added that Beijing is ready to work with all parties, including the EU, to continue to play a significant role in this.

As reported, China offers the United States to hold a joint summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. In this way, Beijing allegedly wants to help end the war in Ukraine, as well as to contribute to peacekeeping efforts after a possible truce.
