"Europe must be at the negotiating table": Foreign Ministers issued a statement on ending the war in Ukraine

Olha LipychWorld

European foreign ministers have issued a joint statement on the possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the war, which the US administration is trying to organize. They emphasized that Europe should be at the table if the talks take place.

This demand was made by the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and representatives of the European Commission, who held talks in Paris on February 12. The statement was published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also participated in the meeting.

The ministers emphasized that they wanted to join the discussion of ending the war in Ukraine together with the United States. They stated that they are ready to strengthen support for Ukraine and are committed to its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in the face of Russia's war of aggression.

"We share the goal of continued support for Ukraine until a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace is achieved. A peace that guarantees the interests of Ukraine and its European allies. We look forward to discussing the way forward with our American allies. Our common goal should be to ensure a position of strength for Ukraine. Ukraine and Europe should be involved in any negotiations," the statement reads.

The European foreign ministers also noted that Ukraine should receive strong security guarantees, and a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine is a prerequisite for strong Euro-Atlantic security.

"We remind you that the security of the European continent is our shared responsibility. Therefore, we are working together to strengthen our collective defense capabilities," they added.

– After the call to Putin, Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They discussed diplomatic, military, and economic issues. Trump informed the Ukrainian president of what Putin had told him.

– At a press conference at the White House, Trump said that Ukraine was "unlikely to return" all of the territories seized by Russia, but suggested that the country could get some of them back. At the same time, he called a return to the 2014 borders "unbelievable."
