EU and NATO put pressure on Greece and Spain to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems – FT
The European Union and NATO are pressuring Greece and Spain to share additional air defense systems with Ukraine. These countries are armed with Patriot and other air defense systems such as S-300.
This was stated by the Financial Times, citing its sources. It is noted that at the summit of European countries in Brussels (Belgium), which took place on April 17-18, EU leaders personally called on the Prime Ministers of Spain and Greece Pedro Sanchez and Kyriakos Mitsotakis to transfer part of their air defense systems to Kyiv.
Both countries have more than a dozen Patriots, among other systems, but Madrid and Athens do not need that many air defense systems.
"We all know who has them (air defense systems – Ed.), we all know where they are, and we all know who really needs them," said one of the FT's interlocutors.
At the same time, Poland and Romania, which also have Patriot, are under less pressure, given their vulnerable location on the border with Ukraine.
According to the FT sources, pressure to provide air defense systems is likely to increase at the April 22 meeting of foreign and defense ministers of all 27 EU member states in Luxembourg.
"There are countries that, to be frank, do not need to purchase air defense systems immediately. Each country is invited to decide what it can sacrifice," said one of the European diplomats involved in the preparation of the meeting.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported:
– On April 19, following the Ukraine-NATO Council, Jens Stoltenberg said that the allies of the military bloc had made specific commitments to supply Ukraine with more air defense systems. Details will be announced in the near future.
– According to Stoltenberg, the Alliance is in talks with "some specific countries" on this issue.
