By calling Putin, Trump disrupted years of established U.S. policy on the Ukraine war – Bloomberg
With a phone call to the Russian dictator, Donald Trump overturned longstanding U.S. policy on the war. His conversation with Putin seems to signal that the American leader is "giving up" on Ukraine.
Bloomberg writes about this. It is noted that following the conversation with Putin, the American president said that they agreed to "immediately begin negotiations" and pay visits to each other's countries. In addition, some European leaders have expressed such concern.
"This rhetoric of the new government demonstrates a sharp change in the position of the United States under Joe Biden," the report said.
The publication notes that after the Russian invasion in February 2022, there was no direct communication between the leaders of the countries. At the same time, Washington was focused on supporting Ukraine in its resistance to Russian aggression.
"Now all this is changing rapidly. European leaders, who were generally in solidarity with Washington under Biden, were stunned to learn of the call, and some said it seemed to signal that Trump was giving up on Ukraine," the article says.
In addition, Trump is skeptical about providing more aid to Ukraine. If he does, he wants the US to be compensated, possibly in the form of access to Ukraine's mineral wealth. On February 12, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited Kyiv to work on this part of the deal.
Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff also joined the effort to end the war in Ukraine. He will be part of the American negotiation team along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other representatives of the Trump administration.
"There is no guarantee that these efforts will lead to success in ending the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine. Zelenskyy insists on the return of all the territory occupied by Moscow's troops. This includes Crimea. These intentions were in line with the official US policy under Biden's presidency, but now it is no longer the case," the journalists added.
It should be added that earlier, Pentagon Chief Pete Hagel told NATO officials in Brussels that Ukraine's return to pre-2014 borders was an "illusory goal." These words have raised concerns that the United States may lose leverage by making concessions before the start of negotiations.
As reported by OBOZ.ua, on Wednesday, February 12, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a conversation with American leader Donald Trump. In particular, the politicians talked about ending the war in Ukraine.
As a reminder, on February 12, US President Donald Trump also had a conversation with the Russian dictator. During the conversation, the politicians, in particular, talked about Ukraine.
Trump called the conversation "long and very productive" and said that they agreed to work together "very closely, including visiting each other's countries," and would begin negotiations "immediately."
