A draft resolution recognizing Russia's actions during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine as an act of genocide has been registered in the United States Congress. The draft was authored by a group that included representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties.

This was announced by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova. She noted that the document was created by 14 American lawmakers, and this is its reintroduction to the House of Representatives of the US Congress.

"We thank the congressmen for introducing this important resolution! All crimes committed by Russia must be reflected in U.S. law to ensure that Russian criminals are punished and to prevent such heinous crimes in the future," Markarova said.

"To recognize Russia's actions in Ukraine as genocide, as the illegal, deliberate, unprovoked and brutal war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine includes large-scale, systematic and egregious atrocities against the people of Ukraine," the document reads in its first lines.

In general, the resolution states that "Russian attacks on civilians, direct attacks on maternity homes and hospitals, and the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of citizens, including children, meet the criteria of Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide."

The resolution not only condemns the Russian Federation for committing acts of genocide against the Ukrainian people but also calls on the United States "to work with NATO and the EU to prevent further acts of Russian genocide." The document also calls for the need to bring "Russian political and military leaders to justice" through tribunals and international criminal investigations.

This resolution was first presented to the previous Congress of the 118th convocation in February 2023.

"The list of Russian war crimes is growing every day, and only a decisive rebuff to aggression through (the provision of) weapons for Ukraine and sanctions for Russia can stop this genocide against the Ukrainian people," Markarova added.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on all countries that have not yet done so to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. Only by knowing why the communist regime previously resorted to genocide of the Ukrainian people can we understand the true motives of the war that Russia is now waging against Ukraine, the diplomat said.
