A tough response to Trump: Canada publishes list of US goods subject to duties
Canada has published a full list of goods from the United States of America that will be subject to the first import duties. The day before, the government announced that it was introducing a 25% duty on goods totaling $30 billion imported from the United States.
The list was published on Sunday, February 2, on the official website of the Ministry of Finance of Canada. The duties will take effect on February 4.
According to the press service of the Canadian department, this is the first stage of Canada's response to the US duties.
The list includes American products, alcohol, clothing, household appliances, tools, firearms, and more. The measures will remain in effect until the US lifts its duties against Canada.
The tariff list includes:
- live poultry (geese, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl), meat and offal from them;
- fruits and vegetables;
- eggs and dairy products such as yogurt, milk, butter and cheese;
- coffee, tea, honey;
- spices (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, caraway seeds, star anise, etc);
- cereals (wheat, rye, oats, rice, barley);
- clothing, including gloves, scarves, shoes, and suits;
- Alcohol, such as wine, vermout, and beer;
- toilet paper;
- various household items, such as dishes, refrigerators water heaters, and other household appliances;
- tools;
- firearms and more.
As a reminder, on February 1, US President Donald Trump signed executive orders to increase duties on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China. They will come into effect on Tuesday, February 4.
These countries are the three largest trading partners of the United States, supplying cars, medicines, footwear, timber, electronics, steel, and many other goods to the United States. Together, they account for more than a third of the goods and services imported into or purchased from the United States, and they support tens of millions of American jobs.
The US president also announced that he intends to impose tariffs on goods from the European Union. He justified his intention by arguing that Europe has been "horribly mistreated" by the United States.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that in response to the 25 percent duties on most Canadian goods, his country would take mirror measures against American goods. According to him, Canada is imposing trade duties on $155 billion worth of US goods.
