China denies supplying Russia with lethal weapons

On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba held talks with his Chinese counterpart, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Wang Yi. During the conversation, the Chinese foreign minister officially denied that China was supplying weapons to the Russian Federation for the war in Ukraine.

According to Wang Yi, China is committed to the principle of political solutions to problems in hot spots, so refusing to sell lethal weapons to warring parties is a "principled position" for Beijing. The meeting between Kuleba and Wang Yi, as well as the content of the conversation, was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.

The Chinese foreign ministry noted that the meeting between Wang Yi and Kuleba on the sidelines of the Munich conference was held at Ukraine's request.

During the conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that China and Ukraine "have been strategic partners for many years, and there is a traditional friendship between the two peoples." He also expressed hope for the further development of China-Ukraine relations to the benefit of both countries "regardless of how the international situation changes."

Among other things, the head of Chinese diplomacy denied that China was supplying arms to Russia.

"Wang Yi highlighted China's principled position on the Ukrainian issue, emphasizing that China adheres to political solutions to problems in hot spots, insists on promoting peace and negotiations, does not add fuel to the fire, does not seize opportunities, and does not sell lethal weapons to conflict areas or parties to the conflict. We will continue to play a constructive role in ending the war and restoring peace as soon as possible. Even if there is only a glimmer of hope for peace, China will not give up its efforts," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In return, Kuleba, according to the Chinese side, assured Wang Yi of Ukraine's readiness to maintain "friendly relations" with China and develop relations between the two countries.

The Ukrainian foreign minister also noted China's influence on world politics and, according to China, assured that our country "highly appreciates China's position paper on the political settlement of the crisis in Ukraine."

According to Kuleba, quoted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Ukraine hopes that China "will continue to play a unique and constructive role in promoting peace."

As reported earlier, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in Munich called on China not to support Russia, which continues its full-scale aggression against Ukraine. He said this during a meeting with Wang Yi.

Borrell also called on Beijing to join the Ukrainian Formula for Peace by joining the Global Peace Summit. The diplomat confirmed that the European Union is determined to support Ukraine with both military assistance and funding.
