100-year-old former US president votes early for Harris – NYT
Jimmy Carter, the former President of the United States and the first American president to live to be 100, cast his vote early in the US presidential election. He voted for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Currently, the 39th President of the United States is in hospice care in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. However, according to The New York Times, the former president's grandson Jason Carter personally delivered his grandfather's ballot to the state election commission.
In Georgia, early voting began on October 7. Election officials said they were not sure if Mr. Carter "voted independently," but his ballot was accepted. According to the election commission, the former president is considered a "respectful and conscientious voter" in Georgia who has never missed an election.
But for the past 10 years, he has voted exclusively by mail.
On October 1, Carter was officially recognized as the oldest former president in the United States. However, according to the Carter family, the former president tried not to mention his age. Instead, he wanted to "vote for Vice President Kamala Harris as soon as possible."
James Earl "Jimmy" Carter still lives in Plains, southwest Georgia, where he was born on October 1, 1924. The 39th President of the United States (1977 to 1981), he was the winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.
Jimmy Carter graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Naval Academy and served as a submarine officer in the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets of the US Navy for seven years. He was promised a general's future in the army. But James Carter chose a career as a politician rather than a military officer.
Carter's presidency was marked by the improvement of the US social security system. In the international arena, he is credited with the conclusion of the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt and the agreement on the use of the Panama Canal.
During Carter's tenure, the so-called "Islamic Revolution" took place in Iran; and Ruhollah Khomeini declared the United States the "Great Satan."
After his presidency, Carter traveled extensively to conduct peace talks, monitor elections, and promote disease prevention and elimination in third-world countries. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.
