An underwater archaeologist and researcher from the University of Nova in Lisbon, Alexandre Monteiro, has discovered more than 8620 shipwrecks in Portuguese waters. The wreckage from shipwrecks is scattered along the coast of mainland Portugal, the Azores, and Madeira.

The scientist estimates that about 250 ships loaded with treasure are buried there. His conclusions are based on a detailed database of shipwrecks dating back to the 1500s, compiled from historical records, EuroWeeklyNews reports.

Among the discovered shipwrecks is the Spanish ship Nossa Senhora do Rosário, which sank in 1589 near Troy. Monteiro's investigation revealed detailed information about the ship, including its cargo of 22 tons of gold and silver and even the name of the captain's mother.

Even though the information from the study was passed on to the government, there is no specific action plan at the moment.

"We know that there are 250 treasure ships, and sooner or later a construction project or something like that will reveal one of them. However, there is no contingency plan to protect such discoveries," EuroNews quoted the archaeologist as saying.

The scientist also added that the risk of looting by treasure hunters is very small, as most of the wreckage remains buried under layers of sand.
