During a meeting with the new Indian Ambassador Ravi Shankar, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited India to join the communiqué of the first Peace Summit held in Switzerland. The state participated in the event but did not sign the joint declaration.

This was reported on the president's website on Friday, August 16. Zelenskyy congratulated the Indian Ambassador on the start of his diplomatic mission in our country and thanked India for joining the promotion of the Peace Formula and participating in the first Peace Summit.

At the same time, the president expressed hope that India would join the Peace Summit communiqué.

"The parties also discussed trade and economic cooperation and other promising areas of bilateral cooperation," the Presidential Office said in a statement.

As a reminder, India, Brazil, Thailand, and several other countries did not sign the final declaration of the Peace Summit held in June 2024 in Switzerland. The Ministry of External Affairs of India explained that the country did not support the communiqué because it believes that "only those options that are acceptable to both sides" can lead to a lasting peace.

"In our opinion, only those options that are acceptable to both sides can lead to a lasting peace. In line with this approach, we have decided to avoid being associated with a general communiqué or any other document arising from this summit," said Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Pavan Kapoor.

Earlier, the media reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi allegedly plans to visit Ukraine in August. This will be his first visit to the country since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.

In early July, Narendra Modi visited Russia and held talks with dictator Putin. The Indian prime minister then called for a dialogue to end the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy criticized Modi's meeting with Putin, calling it a "crushing blow to peace efforts". "It's depressing to see the leader of the world's largest democracy hugging the world's most notorious criminal in Moscow," he said.

The Indian Foreign Ministry then summoned Ukraine's ambassador over Zelenskyy's remarks.
