Ukraine will join NATO only within the 1991 borders, other options are not discussed, – Stefanishyna
Ukraine will be part of NATO as a sovereign and independent country within the 1991 state borders. Other options have not been discussed.
This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna in an interview with a Ukrainian media outlet. When the interviewer asked her opinion on joining the North Atlantic Alliance "in parts," i.e., within the territory controlled by Ukraine, the government representative replied:
"I do not believe that Ukraine should propose any solutions now before the allies have offered Ukrainian membership in the Alliance."
Kyiv will hold talks with each of the 32 NATO nations and listen to the allies. The dialog will be open and public.
"We will never raise the question of certain restrictions or redistribution in the issue of NATO membership. There is Ukraine within the 1991 borders, a sovereign, independent country that is joining NATO," Stefanishyna emphasized.
So far, there is no format with a thorough discussion of this issue.
As reported by OBOZ.UA:
– Earlier, Czech President Petr Pavel suggested that our country's accession to NATO should not depend on the de-occupation of the territories. He is convinced that the country can be accepted within the borders that it will control at the time of accession.
– Ukrainian diplomat, Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland (2014-2022) Andriy Deshchytsia noted that the path to NATO is long and lobbyists among partners should be involved.
– Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed hope that Kyiv would be invited to join the Alliance at the 2025 summit in The Hague (Netherlands). But for this, the country must win the war with the Russian Federation.
