The day before, on January 3, 2024, the last female marine, Halyna Fedyshyn, returned from Russian captivity. The combat medic went through a difficult period of defense of Mariupol, Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, Azovstal, and almost two years in captivity with the occupiers.

This was reported on Facebook by the commander of the 36th Marine Brigade Serhiy Volynsky (Volyn). Halyna is from the village of Svarychiv, Rozhnyativ community, Ivano-Frankivsk region.

"Halyna Fedyshyn, the last girl marine who was in captivity, is at home! She went through a difficult path of defense of Mariupol, Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, Azovstal and hellish captivity," said Volynsky.

The girl studied at the Zvyagel Professional Medical College and graduated in 2015. Upon returning to the Ivano-Frankivsk region, she registered with the military commissariat. Nina Moroz, director of the social and psychological service of the Zvyagel Medical College, told Suspilne about this in a commentary.

"For a year, she was begging at their doorsteps because they did not want to take her. Halyna is small and thin. But in the end, she achieved her goal and was accepted to the team," the woman said.

Nina Moroz also said that Halyna was injured and taken prisoner in May 2022 while leaving Azovstal. At the same time, her military boyfriend, who is from Donetsk region, was captured. During their captivity, they were unable to see each other, but the boyfriend somehow managed to find out that Halyna was alive. He was released from captivity a little earlier.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during her captivity, Halyna Fedyshyn communicated with the occupiers in Ukrainian. The Russians imitated several times that she was being taken for an exchange, but each time they returned her to her place of detention.

When the 28-year-old combat medic returned home from captivity, her 30-year-old boyfriend, a marine with the 36th Separate Mechanized Brigade, Mykola Hrytsenyak, immediately proposed to her. Their love did not stop in the face of difficulties and did not break after surviving captivity and a long period of separation.

Earlier it was reported that on January 3, Ukraine and Russia conducted the largest exchange of prisoners of war - 230 Ukrainian defenders returned home. Experts believe that the aggressor country took such a step, having its own goals, which it will later use in information campaigns.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported that since the beginning of the full-scale war, 2, 828 Ukrainian citizens have been returned from Russian captivity. This process will continue.
