Russia seeks to recapture Kupyansk in Kharkiv region – British intelligence

Russian offensive on Kupyansk

Russia continues to put pressure on the Ukrainian defense in the Kupyansk sector. Russian forces are now several hundred meters from the Oskil River and about 20 km south of Kupyansk.

Russia is likely seeking to recapture this district center, which is an important railroad hub, after losing Kupyansk in September 2022. This is stated in a report by the UK Ministry of Defense.

Russia continues to make efforts to advance in the Kupyansk direction. Currently, the occupation forces are several hundred meters from the Oskil River, in a narrow ledge about 20 kilometers south of the city of Kupyansk.

"It is likely that ongoing Russian attacks are complicating Ukrainian operations on the eastern shore of Oskol," the British defense ministry said.

As early as October 15, local authorities in Kharkiv region issued an order for the mandatory evacuation of civilians from several settlements in the Kupiansk district.

"Russia will likely continue to make gains in the region in the coming weeks. Russian forces have made sporadic attempts to regain control of Kupyansk after losing the city in September 2022 during a Ukrainian counteroffensive. The city is located on the Oskil River and is a railway junction that supports Ukrainian logistics in this area," the British Ministry of Defense summarized.

Earlier, British intelligence said that Ukraine was undermining Russia's military potential in the occupied Crimea. Among the targets hit by the Ukrainian Defense Forces are airfields, command posts, oil depots, and the Crimean Bridge.

One of the latest targets to be hit was an offshore oil terminal in occupied Feodosia, which was struck by the Defense Forces on October 7. The successful attack has significantly undermined the military capabilities of Russian troops in the region, the intelligence noted.
