Russia is panicking over the capabilities of Ukrainian drones and electronic warfare: ISW talks about the race of innovation
Some Russian military commentators continue to complain about the superiority of Ukrainian drones and electronic warfare equipment on the battlefield. For example, they note that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are quickly adapting and better integrating new technologies into their units, which affects the combat situation in Ukraine.
This was reported by analysts of the Institute for War Studies. Thus, on June 4, a Russian milblogger, who used to be an instructor of the Storm-Z unit, published a list of complaints, detailing the problems faced by Russian forces in the fight against Ukrainian drones.
He noted that the effective and widespread use of Ukrainian drones has become a "leading factor" in Ukraine's ability to repel Russian offensives.
Milblogger identified six aspects of the differences between Russian and Ukrainian drones, emphasizing that Ukrainian forces have a significant numerical advantage in first-person-view (FPV) drones and FPV drone operators. He claims that Ukrainian assault groups have a 3-4:1 ratio of FPV drones compared to Russian assault units. And Ukrainian mechanized groups have a 6-10:1 advantage in the ratio of FPV drones over similar Russian units.
Milblogger also noted that Ukraine has specialized and centralized drone units within existing ground units, which allows Ukrainian forces to better integrate intelligence capabilities into basic tactical maneuvers.
Russian forces, unlike Ukrainian forces, do not have a centralized and organized system of unmanned aerial vehicles, nor do they have adequate electronic warfare and electronic intelligence (EW) capabilities to counter Ukrainian drones.
Another milblogger noted that specialized Ukrainian drone units were effectively destroying unprotected Russian armored vehicles in the Avdiivka sector, deterring the prospects of a Russian offensive in the area. He emphasized that the supply of FPV drones and the necessary electronic warfare and electronic warfare systems to Russian troops is largely on a volunteer basis, as there is no centralized supply mechanism from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
As Ukrainian forces adapt and better integrate new technologies into their units, Russian forces will likely feel pressure to do the same to maintain technological and tactical parity on the battlefield. This race to innovate and build capabilities is key to the development of combat capabilities in modern warfare.
Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would continue to increase its own production of long-range FPV drones. While Western partners delayed the supply of weapons to the Defense Forces, it was they who were able to protect the front. He emphasized that Russia should constantly feel the increase in our production.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Ukrainian scouts are using FPV drones to destroy enemy equipment at the front. Footage was posted online showing FPV drones hitting enemy vehicles while they were moving.
