Powerful explosions shake Russian Moscow region, Kursk, Ryazan and Bryansk overnight as oil refineries come under attack. Video

The sounds of explosions were heard in different areas

On January 23, powerful explosions were heard in the Russian Moscow region, as well as Kursk and Ryazan. Local residents claim that this is the most massive drone attack in recent months.

Meanwhile, Kremlin propagandists rushed to report on the "successful work of air defense." This is evidenced by posts on Russian Telegram channels.

According to the Russian media, 200 to 400 Ukrainian drones targeted Russia at the same time. This raid is called one of the largest in recent times.

At the time, Kursk residents reported that the city was welcoming "gifts," referring to precise UAV strikes.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the sounds of explosions were heard in different parts of the city, and that the sky over Kursk was lit by flashes from air defense systems.

Although the official Russian authorities tried to downplay the scale of the attack as usual, the Russian Defense Ministry has already stated that air defense systems have allegedly destroyed 49 Ukrainian drones since 19:00 of January 23.

In particular, 37 UAVs were allegedly destroyed over the Kursk region, 7 over the Bryansk region, 4 over the Crimea, and one over the Belgorod region.

The head of Kursk, Igor Kutsak, said that a Ukrainian UAV was shot down over Kursk, the debris of which damaged four households.

Oil refinery in Ryazan came under attack. According to locals, air raid alert was heard in the city, as well as the work of air defense systems and explosions.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, noted that there is an oil depot in Ryazan region.

"The oil refinery is one of the key facilities of the Russian oil industry, which, although under sanctions, is still operating. It is located in the Ryazan region and plays an important role in providing fuel for both civilians and military-industrial complex of Russia," he said.

This plant produces fuel for military equipment, aviation kerosene, diesel fuel and other types of petroleum products used in tanks, aircraft, ships and other equipment of the Russian Armed Forces.

Thus, a fire was reported near the Ryazan Oil Refinery. In particular, a cottage town and other buildings were burning.

Local residents reported a fire in the area of a thermal power plant and oil refinery in Ryazan after a UAV attack.

The governor of the Ryazan region said that the liquidation of the consequences of the air attack continued.

In addition, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that a UAV attack on Moscow was allegedly repelled in the Moscow region.

It has been reported that Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports temporarily halted their work.

There was also information about explosions in Bryansk.

In Bryansk, the Kremniy El plant, which specializes in the production of electronics for the Russian military-industrial complex, came under fire.

At 6 a.m. Kyiv time (7 a.m. Moscow time) on the morning of January 24, the Russian Defense Ministry said that air defense systems "intercepted and destroyed 121 Ukrainian UAVs" overnight.

37 of them were allegedly shot down over Bryansk region, 20 over Ryazan region, 17 over Kursk region, 17 over Saratov region, seven over Rostov region, six over Moscow and Belgorod regions, three over Voronezh region, two over Tula, Orel and Lipetsk regions, one over occupied Crimea and one over Moscow.

In addition, according to the aggressor country's Defense Ministry, from 06:00 to 07:00 (Moscow time), "three Ukrainian UAVs were destroyed" over the territory of Leningrad region.

As a reminder, on the night of January 21, Russia reported a drone attack on the city of Smolensk. The explosions were heard in the area where an aviation plant is located.

As reported, a locomotive used to supply weapons, equipment and ammunition to the Russian army was destroyed in St. Petersburg. The incident occurred at the Ruchye tram depot on January 18, 2025.
