"Our position is clear": Poland speaks on the possibility of shooting down missiles and drones over Ukraine
Poland will not shoot down missiles or drones flying over the territory of Ukraine. The country's position on this issue remains unchanged, as does that of its allies.
This was stated on Tuesday by Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Wieslaw Kukula, Rzeczpospolita reports. He also noted that Poland is "under the threat" of war.
"Our position and the position of our allies is clear. We will not do this. Today, our responsibility for protecting the skies of our allies is determined by our borders," said the head of the Polish General Staff.
He noted that the possibility of a war between Poland and Russia depends on the Poles themselves. As Russia will run a risk if it tries to attack a country that is well prepared for defense and has a society capable of resisting.
"This is a real threat. For me, the most important question is different. Will we be able to build the resilience of the state system and the ability of the armed forces to eliminate this threat in the long run and when?" Kukula said.
"Aggression always feeds on weaknesses," he added.
Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski did not rule out that NATO could discuss the issue of intercepting Russian missiles in the airspace over Ukraine. According to him, this is a complex issue that raises important aspects of the right to self-defense and requires agreement among the Alliance members.
As OBOZ.UA reported, in July, Ukraine and Poland signed a so-called security agreement. The document, among other things, referred to the possibility of intercepting missiles and drones in Ukrainian airspace fired in the direction of Poland.
Later, however, Polish government officials began to say that this was a possibility that was being discussed, and that other NATO countries were allegedly against it (of the latter, only the United States openly stated this).
