Consensus reached: the US Senate issued a statement on assistance to Ukraine and Israel

The US Congress has reached a "consensus" on approving aid to Ukraine and Israel. Both Republicans and Democrats agreed that they need to "act quickly."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said this at a press conference in New York on April 14. According to him, on Sunday, during a conversation between President Joe Biden and congressional leaders, a "consensus" was reached that Congress needed to act quickly to send aid to both Israel and Ukraine.

Schumer also expressed hope that something could be done this week for both countries.

In particular, on Sunday, in addition to Schumer, House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell participated in the conversation with Biden.

Schumer said that the best way to direct aid to Israel and Ukraine is for the House to consider and approve the Senate-approved supplemental national security package, which includes aid to both countries.

In February, the Senate passed a $95 billion package, but Johnson did not bring it to a vote.

"The best way to help Israel rebuild its missile defense and anti-drone capabilities is to pass this supplemental immediately. As I said, Israel has spent more than a billion dollars on its defense, and the additional security measures will add to the missile and drone defense system that is in place in the Arrow, the Sling of David, and Iron Dome," Schumer said.

On Saturday, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Republican, said that the House would change its legislative schedule this week to "consider legislation that supports our ally Israel and holds Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable."

On April 14, White House adviser John Kirby said that the U.S. House of Representatives has the votes to pass the Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan Assistance Act - the document just needs to be put to a vote.

Republican Congressman Mike Turner, in turn, said that the House of Representatives would consider a bill with $60 billion for Ukraine this week and expressed confidence that the document would be approved by a majority vote.

Politico reported that the White House is privately working with Johnson to get the aid package to the floor for a vote. Johnson himself said that he was in a difficult position and that the House of Representatives was working "to reach a consensus."

Israel has promised a response to Iran. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and a number of leaders condemned Iran's aggression, emphasizing that neither the Middle East nor the world "can afford another war."

US President Biden convened consultations in the G7 to formulate a response to the attacks, and Italy also made a statement about the urgent convening of the G7 meeting.
