British Foreign Secretary opposes sending Western troops to Ukraine: what is the reason

NATO may be in "best shape" for US elections

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has spoken out against sending Western troops to Ukraine. He explained this by not becoming a target for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He said this in the BBC's Ukrainecast podcast. Cameron admitted that "the war will be lost if the allies do not step up."

But when asked whether Western countries should send troops to Ukraine, he said "no."

The British foreign minister added that NATO will probably be in "the best shape possible" before the US elections.

Cameron said that next week he will visit the United States for the second time since becoming foreign secretary and will urge Congress to provide more financial support that "could make a difference" in Ukraine.

He said that NATO will have to work with whoever wins the US elections this year, so now is the time to get in "the best shape possible for November."

"If we can get this money from the US Congress, if we can provide Ukraine with the weapons it needs, if we can show Putin that he cannot wait us out and that Ukraine is going to fight back and liberate most of its territory. If we can do all of this, whoever comes in November, we will look at the situation in Ukraine and... look at how more and more NATO members are spending 2% of GDP on defense and say: this is a historic success," he said.
