Another teenager deported by Russia returned to Ukraine: details

Ukraine returns teenager deported by Russia from Mariupol

Ukraine has returned 17-year-old Oleksandr from Mariupol from Russian deportation. The occupiers took him to Moscow as part of a group of 31 children in April 2022.

This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine. They noted that the vast majority of minors in the group were orphans or deprived of parental care.

Currently, Oleksandr is already in Kyiv. He became the 5th of the group of deported Ukrainian minors. Having been in a foreign country for almost two years, the young man was eager to return to Ukraine.

Earlier, the 12-year-old son of an Armed Forces servicewoman was returned to his native land, who was visiting his father in the Luhansk region at the time of the full-scale Russian invasion. Due to Russian aggression, the child had not seen his mother for 18 months: the boy spent four months in Russia and the rest of the time in the occupied part of the Luhansk region.

However, not all children abducted by Russia are lucky enough to return home. In particular, a 12-year-old girl from the occupied territory of the Luhansk region died on the Tomsk-Adler train in Russia. 124 children were taken off the train and hospitalized in Saratov hospitals, and Rospotrebnadzor announced an outbreak of influenza.

As reported by OBOZ.UA:

- In early December 2023, Ukraine returned eight children who had previously been abducted by Russia. Four girls and four boys aged 8 to 18 were reunited with their families.

- Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, said that there are currently about 20,000 Ukrainian children who have been illegally deported from Ukraine by Russia. However, there is reason to believe that the true number of children abducted by Russia could be hundreds of thousands.
