Why repeated strikes on the Chornobyl NPP are dangerous: the situation may change
To date, no radioactive substances have been released after a Russian drone hit the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. However, in case of repeated shelling of the NPP, the situation may change.
Despite significant damage after the shelling, the radiation situation remains within the control levels. This was stated by Hryhoriy Ishchenko, Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, during the telethon.
According to him, the radiation situation is currently calm, so there can be no emissions. However, Ishchenko warned that if the Russian occupiers attack the Chornobyl NPP again, the situation could change.
He also noted that the situation with the radiation background on the Chornobyl NPP site, including the NSC of the Shelter, has remained unchanged since the beginning of the fire and during the process of eliminating the consequences of the shelling.
"That is, the release of radioactive substances beyond the limits has not been established. No personnel exposure above the control levels was recorded. The radiation situation parameters are within the control levels," Ishchenko said.
He also added that a meeting with the participation of many research institutes is scheduled for next week to assess the damage to the confidentiality and to pass on the information to the state leadership.
As a reminder, during the attack on the night of February 14, a Russian attack drone hit a shelter over the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. A fire broke out there, and the facility was severely damaged. According to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, "the drone was flying at an altitude of 85 meters," so radar did not detect it.
According to the SSU, the drone used by the Russians to hit the Chornobyl nuclear power plant was equipped with an explosive warhead.
