US announces new aid package for Ukraine with cluster munitions

On 7 July, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine. It includes cluster munitions.
This was announced by White House spokesman Jacob Sullivan. They are likely to be provided from the US army's stockpile.
"We base our decision on security assistance on Ukraine's needs, and Ukraine needs artillery to support its offensive and defensive operations," he said.
Cluster munitions release a large number of small fragments, making them more dangerous to civilians.
They also have a relatively high percentage of frangibility, which makes them dangerous for many years after the end of a conflict.
In 2008, more than 120 countries adopted a treaty banning the production, use and stockpiling of cluster munitions. The US, Russia and Ukraine refused to join it.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL:
- The day before, the Pentagon said that it was considering the possibility of supplying Ukraine with cluster munitions, but it was not about outdated types of shells.
- Human Rights Watch has called on the US not to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions, cynically accusing the Ukrainian military of using "banned weapons". The Office of the President of Ukraine said that the organisation was trying to disrupt the supply of weapons and that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine, killing civilians.
- According to media reports, Ukraine may receive cluster munitions from the US as early as July.
