Ukrainian troops regain lost positions in the Kharkiv and Pokrovsk sectors: ISW assesses the situation

Recently, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have regained lost ground in the Kharkiv sector and near Pokrovsk in Donetsk region. However, the occupiers also made advances – on the front line near Chasovyi Yar, Toretsk, Kurakhove, and in the south.

This is stated in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). They once again pointed to the unconfirmed statements of propagandists about the "successes" of Russian troops.

It is noted that against the backdrop of ongoing Russian offensive operations in the north of Kharkiv region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine advanced in the northern part of Vovchansk (northeast of Kharkiv). At the same time, the invaders conducted attacks in the area of Kozacha Lopan (north of Kharkiv along the international border) on January 29 and 30.

In the Pokrovsk sector, the Ukrainian Defense Forces made some progress west of Novoandriivka (southwest of Pokrovsk). Russian pro-war bloggers claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces also counterattacked near Nadiivka (north of Novoandriivka).

A representative of the National Guard Brigade of Ukraine said that the occupants are conducting exclusively infantry attacks with limited support from equipment, and Ukrainian drones continue to be the most effective weapon to repel enemy attacks in the direction of Pokrovsk.

ISW found no confirmation of propagandists' claims about the alleged advance of Russian forces southwest of the district center – in the area of Kotlynove, in the forest areas south of Uspenivka, north of Vozdvyzhenka (east of Pokrovsk).

Although it is reported that on January 29 and 30, the invaders continued attacks near Pokrovsk itself; to the east of the city near Vozdvyzhenka, Malynivka, Vodiane Druhe, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Novotoretske, Myroliubivka; to the southeast – near Lysivka; to the south – near Vidrodzhennia (formerly Novyi Trud) and Zvirove; to the southwest – near Kotlyne, Novoukrainka, Udachne, Kotliarivka, and Yasenove. According to available data, drone operators of the 1195th Russian motorized rifle regiment (41st Army, Central Military District) are operating in the Pokrovske direction.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the UAV platoon commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 68th Brigade, call sign "Furia," said that in the Pokrovsk sector, the occupiers are constantly trying to attack with small infantry groups under the cover of fog. In addition, they are also actively using drones: sometimes 30 enemy FPV drones arrive at one position of the Defense Forces.
