Scholz: decision to support Ukraine is unshakable, Russia must withdraw troops

A month and a half before the NATO summit in Vilnius, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the leaders of the Alliance would discuss, first and foremost, concrete support for Ukraine during the war. He said that the issue of support for Ukraine is the most pressing one today.

This is stated by the publication Err. Scholz made this statement during his visit to Tallinn.

The summit will focus "primarily on organising concrete support for Ukraine in this situation," Scholz said after a meeting with representatives of the Baltic states in response to a question about Kyiv's desire to receive an official invitation from NATO to the summit in July.

According to him, the main question now is "how we can improve cooperation in the specific situation of the Russian attack on Ukraine, and how we can make it clear that we will provide this support for as long as it is necessary".

Scholz confirmed that Germany will continue to support Ukraine politically, with weapons and humanitarian aid. "This decision is unshakable. Russia must realise that this war is pointless and it must withdraw its troops," he said, adding that the West should also strengthen sanctions against Russia and find ways to prevent sanctions evasion.
