Russian military strikes at Mykolaiv CHP: more than 100,000 people left without heat
On the night of February 16, the Russian occupiers attacked a critical infrastructure facility, the Mykolaiv Thermal Power Plant. A kamikaze drone strike injured one of the workers and he was taken to the hospital.
More than 100,000 people are left without heat supply. This was reported by Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Vitaliy Kim and Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.
According to Senkevych, since the night of the attack, work has been underway to eliminate the consequences of the Russian attack, as it is necessary to return heat to the homes of the citizens as soon as possible.
Shmyhal emphasized that it was a targeted attack by the Russian Federation on the critical infrastructure of Mykolaiv.
"Enemy UAVs damaged the city's thermal power plant. This was done deliberately to leave people without heat in sub-zero temperatures and create a humanitarian catastrophe," the Prime Minister said.
After the attack, a fire broke out at the critical infrastructure facility, which was quickly extinguished by rescuers.
Later, Senkevych told the telethon about the details of the nighttime Russian attack. According to him, the enemy drones damaged the Mykolaiv Heat and Power Plant.
"This is an employee of the Mykolaiv CHP plant. It's no longer a secret, because the Russians know where they are shooting, and Mykolaiv residents know that some of their houses have lost heating," the mayor said.
According to Kim, the wounded man is 64 years old and was hospitalized. His condition is currently satisfactory.
Senkevych explained that the Russian strike completely destroyed the city's electricity generation, which cannot be restored in the near future. As a result, Russia left a large part of the city without centralized heating.
"Today we have a main goal - to start heating, at least the part of the CHP that was working to heat the townspeople," said the mayor.
Russian UAVs also attacked other areas of the city. One of the drones hit the roadway on Tsentralnyi Avenue.
As a result, 18 non-residential buildings were damaged, including catering establishments, shops, and offices. In addition, four residential apartment buildings were damaged.
The enemy also attacked Zavodsky district of Mykolaiv. According to the mayor, public utilities continue to eliminate the consequences of another Russian attack.
Senkevych emphasized that there were no casualties.
The Mykolaiv Regional State Administration reported that the authorities and relevant services are working in an emergency mode to stabilize the situation and provide heat to the city's residents as soon as possible.
"All relevant services are eliminating the consequences of the attack and doing everything possible to restore heat supply to homes, schools and hospitals as soon as possible," the prime minister added.
Residents of Mykolaiv were reminded that if necessary, they can contact the invincibility points. The current addresses of the centers can be found on the Diia portal.
Shmyhal informed that 67 invincibility points have already been deployed in the city, and the connection of three modular boiler rooms in healthcare facilities has begun.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the night shelling of Mykolaiv. According to him, ordinary civilian infrastructure was damaged, which has nothing to do with the fighting and the situation at the front.
"This proves once again that the Russians are fighting against our people, against life in Ukraine. And they are fighting viciously, without relenting. This is not the way of those who really want to restore peace and prepare for negotiations," he emphasized, noting that repair crews are actively working and trying to restore heating to Mykolaiv.
Zelensky promised to continue to work with partners at all levels not only to strengthen protection against such attacks, but also to prevent Russia from dragging out this war or making the threat to life permanent. According to him, it is necessary to press Russia for peace.
"The recent strike of the "Shahed" on the shelter at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, this strike on Mykolaiv, all other similar Russian strikes should lead to a strong reaction, to strong interaction between us - all partners - and to work together to force Russia to peace," the president said.
Earlier it became known that on the night of February 16, the Russian army launched a massive attack on Mykolaiv. A fire broke out there and was quickly extinguished by firefighters. Other destructions were recorded in the regional center. One person has been reported injured.
