ISWL: Defense Forces advance in Luhansk and Western Zaporizhzhia regions

War in Ukraine

The Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out counter-offensive operations on at least three sections of the front: Bakhmut, Melitopol and Berdiansk on Tuesday, August 15. Our defenders managed to advance in the Luhansk and the western part of the Zaporizhzhia regions.

This is stated in the analysis of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW). In particular, coordinates published by a Russian blogger indicate that Ukrainian forces have advanced south of Dibrova, which is 7 kilometers southwest of Kremenna.

In addition, geolocation footage published on August 14 indicates that Ukrainian forces advanced toward Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region, and subsequent Russian and Ukrainian reports published on August 15 suggest that Ukrainian forces sent additional counteroffensive brigades into western Zaporizhzhia.

Analysts quoted Ukrainian Colonel Petro Chernyk as saying that the Ukrainian counteroffensive in southern Ukraine is moving slowly because Ukrainian troops have to overcome Russia's three-echelon defense line. He specified that the first is minefields several kilometers wide; the second line with concentrations of artillery, equipment and personnel, and the third is a rear position designed to preserve resources.

Chernyk noted that Ukrainian counter-battery measures are particularly important to prevent Russian artillery from hitting Ukrainian demining assets.

"Chernyk's statements are consistent with ISW's preliminary assessments that Russia's doctrinally sound elastic defense is slowing the advance of Ukrainian forces in southern Ukraine," the analysts said.

Representatives of the military movement of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars Atesh reported that the Russian occupiers are preparing for battles for Hola Prystan, west of Kherson. The invaders have introduced a high-alert regime in the temporarily occupied town. Defensive structures are arranged around the city.

As reported OBOZREVATEL:

- It became known that a column of occupiers under the fire of the AFU artillery escaped from Urozhayne, Donetsk region on August 13. The mop-up operation continues in the settlement, while propagandists have thrown a tantrum over the "alarming situation" in the locality;

- Experts from TheTimes magazine published a piece in which they pointed out that the AFU counter-offensive is advancing at a slower pace than expected and is noticeably deviating from the plan. It is obvious that the Ukrainian army will achieve the planned goal and liberate the territories from the invaders from Russia, but do not expect the war to end before the end of 2023.
