The Security Service of Ukraine has released a photo of the wreckage of the "Geran-2" drone that attacked the Chornobyl NPP on the night of February 14. To maximize damage, the occupiers equipped it with an explosive warhead. The case is being investigated as a war crime.
According to the SSU press service on February 14, investigators from the special services, together with the relevant authorities, are working at the site of the attack. Inside and near the shelter over the fourth power unit, they found fragments of a Russian UAV hull with a warhead and serial number.
According to the investigation, the occupiers attacked the Chornobyl NPP with a "Geran-2" Shahed-type kamikaze drone.
For maximum firepower, the Russians equipped it with an explosive warhead.
According to experts, the occupants deliberately hit this particular facility, the SSU said.
The hit damaged the structure of the shelter.
The radiation background on the territory of the nuclear power plant and in the exclusion zone does not exceed the permissible values, and no radiation exceeding the established limits was recorded.
SSU investigators opened criminal proceedings, and the pre-trial investigation is ongoing under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine "violation of the laws and customs of war."
Measures are underway to establish all the circumstances of Russia's crime and bring the perpetrators to justice, the SSU said.
The operation is conducted under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor's Office.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on Friday night, a Russian UAV hit the sarcophagus over the fourth unit of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The fire was extinguished and the radiation background did not increase, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The IAEA confirmed the attack and expressed concern about "risks to nuclear safety," but remained silent on who exactly could have launched the "Shahed."
OBOZ.UA's sources informed that the "Shahed" was flying at ultra-low altitudes. The top layer of the sarcophagus was damaged, and there was no through penetration.
Speaking to journalists in Munich, Zelenskyy said that the kamikaze drone was flying at an altitude of 85 meters. Radars could not see it, so, according to the head of state, this indicates a targeted attack by Russia.
