"Enviable": the first head of the DIU reacts to criticism of Budanov

The head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, is in his place. The first head of the DIU (1992-1997), Oleksandr Skipalskyi, suggested that some people envy Budanov "because he is young and has achievements," and that Russian influence is an important source of his criticism.

In an exclusive interview with OBOZ.UA, Lieutenant General Skipalskyi supported the current head of the DIU. He believes that such an important structure in a full-scale war should be headed by "such a young combat general."

"But because he is young and has achievements, he causes envy. They say, how is it that Budanov is being honored, while I, also a general, am not. This is compounded by the political image syndrome. And this is a very threatening trend, it should not be allowed," he said.

The lieutenant general is confident that the political image of "those who cannot, are not capable, do not cope in a high position or abuse power" will still fall, while the image of authoritative combat generals will grow.

Skipalskyi said that our country's intelligence is based on the principles of the military intelligence of the United States and some European countries.

"This is a structure that does not imply totalitarian influence. The right statement was made by President Zelenskyy – that Budanov is in place today, Budanov is working. And I think it should be that way," the first head of the DIU expressed his position.

He also emphasized the influence of the Russian Federation. "If Russia manages to undermine the situation in the elections in the United States and Europe, imagine the influence it can still have in Ukraine, where it knows everything because of the historical past, historical ties, etc. And this influence is clearly visible," the expert explained.

"What structure in Ukraine do you think is the most annoying for Russia? Most of all, it is military intelligence. The agent network is working, and after 5-10 broadcasts, someone who believes in the message, starts making statements that it is necessary to change the structures of the DIU and deal a devastating blow to the military intelligence system.

As a person who helped to lay the foundations on which the Ukrainian military intelligence successfully performs its tasks, I have the moral right to say: hands off the GUR and Kyrylo Budanov," Skipalskyi summarized.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Budanov recently called the rumors about his possible dismissal "another accusation." He believes that they are being spread for destabilization purposes and assures that he has normal working relations with the Office of the President of Ukraine.
