The Ukrainian Defense Forces have recently regained lost ground near the towns of Chasiv Yar and Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast. Russian troops have also made some advances in these areas amid constant offensives, but not everything they boasted about is confirmed.

The situation was described by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Analysts refer to geolocation footage published on January 18 and 19.

Chasiv Yar

According to reports from the frontline, Ukrainian troops have regained their lost positions at the Refractory Plant in the central part of Chasiv Yar. The spokesperson for the Luhansk operational and tactical group, Lieutenant Colonel Dmytro Zaporozhets, said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled Russian attacks of small and medium caliber on the plant's territory.

Against this background, pro-war bloggers in Russia claimed that their army units had seized Novopivnichny and Desyatyi neighborhoods, advanced near the refractory plant's shops and in the northern part of the city. However, ISW emphasizes that there is no evidence of this.

At the same time, it is noted that Russian forces advanced along Tolstoy Street in the western part of the city. Also, on January 18-19, the occupiers continued ground attacks in Chasiv Yar itself and to the south of it - near Predtechyno, Stupochky, and Bila Hora.

According to military observers, units of the Russian 215th Reconnaissance Battalion (98th Airborne Division), UAV operators of the Terek and Sever-V reconnaissance brigades are operating in the direction of Chasiv Yar; additional units of the same 98th Division and the 200th Motorized Rifle Brigade (14th Army Corps, Leningrad Military District) of the Russian Armed Forces are operating in the city itself.

Toretsk

The Defense Forces reportedly recaptured the lost positions in southern Shcherbynivka (southwest of Toretsk). However, Russian troops advanced to the north through the territory of the Toretska mine in the north of the city, as well as to the northwest - along Stepan Razin Street in the west of the city.

Once again, ISW found no evidence of propagandists' statements about the alleged capture of half of the Toretsk mine by Russian troops, advances in the area of the Central mine in the city center, and the "clearing" of Ukrainian positions in Krymske (north of Toretsk). Although the occupiers continued their offensive in the Toretsk area, they also advanced north of Toretsk near Diliyivka and southwest near Shcherbynivka.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Luhansk military operation center noted that in Toretsk, Russians resorted to small-group assaults. Part of the city is under enemy control, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces keep a large part of its territory under fire.
