Canada will provide 450 SkyRanger multi-purpose UAVs to Ukraine. Shipments are expected to begin in the summer of 2024.
The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of the Drone Coalition Steering Group on April 14. On its official website, the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that the partners had received information about the situation on the battlefield and the urgent needs of the Defense Forces.
Deputy Defense Minister Kateryna Chornohorenko told the meeting that the situation on the front line is changing every day.
"The enemy continues to attack civilian objects, especially energy infrastructure. We need tools for an asymmetric response. Time is running out to discuss solutions, we need them now," she said.
The Drone Coalition (created within the framework of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine's Defense) is led by the United Kingdom and Latvia. Other members are Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds called on the participants to remember that the war is ongoing, so it is time for all participants to join the initiative, which is gaining momentum and is awaiting the accession of new countries.
Other decisions were also made at the meeting:
– Lithuania will allocate 3 million euros for the production of FPV drones for Ukraine;
– The Netherlands confirmed its intentions to contract a batch of Heidrun RQ-35 drones for 200 million euros in cooperation with Denmark and Germany;
– Germany will transfer VECTOR 211 reconnaissance drones to Ukraine.
The SkyRanger R70 is a powerful quadcopter, but the main thing is that it can operate completely autonomously without GPS and communication with the operator. Earlier, Defence Express experts noted that this ability is very useful in the event of enemy electronic warfare activity.
These drones can perform reconnaissance missions, monitor the situation, and transport and deliver cargo.
The cost of the SkyRanger R70 is quite high – 87.5 thousand US dollars per unit.
