On May 19, Russian invaders attacked a car of Sumyoblenergo employees in the Sumy region, who were on their way to repair the damage to the region's power grid. The attack killed two electricians and a driver.
The invaders attacked the vehicle with a UAV. Sumyoblenergo JSC and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported another crime by the Russian occupiers.
"It is with great pain and sadness that we inform you of the difficult news for the staff of JSC "SUMYOBLENERGO". Today, on May 19, 3 employees of our company were killed by an enemy drone attack while searching for the place of damage to the overhead line, according to preliminary information. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of our colleagues! May the heroes of the energy front have a blessed memory," Sumyoblenergo said in a statement.
The Office of the Prosecutor General has launched a pre-trial investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war by the invaders, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) over the deaths of power engineers in the Sumy region.
According to the prosecutor's office, the occupiers attacked a Sumyoblenergo vehicle at around 11:45 a.m. on May 19. The employees of the energy company were travelling along a field road in the territory of the Yunakivska community of the Sumy district.
Representatives of the Prosecutor's Office and other law enforcement agencies are working at the scene of the death of the power company employees. The consequences of the crime are being recorded and evidence is being seized.
The pre-trial investigation is being carried out by investigators of the SBU Office in the Sumy region.
Earlier, it was reported that one of the thermal power plants in the east of Ukraine stopped working due to Russian shelling. The plant stopped producing electricity due to damage to the main lines that supplied power to the plant.
After the shelling, Ukrenergo announced a decrease in electricity production in Ukraine. Currently, it is enough to cover the needs of consumers, but to maintain the balance in the evening, the power company urged Ukrainians to consume electricity more economically: to shift electricity use from the evening hours (19:00 to 22:00) to the morning, day or night.
