WHO predicts when COVID-19 pandemic may be declared over

The World Health Organization (WHO) hopes that as early as 2023 it will be possible to declare the end of the coronavirus pandemic. The spread of COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by WHO three years ago.

This was announced by WHO Director-General Tedros Adanom Ghebreisus on March 13 at the Thomas Francis Jr. Medal for Global Public Health. His speech was published on the organization's website.

Gebreisus noted that there have been nearly 7 million deaths from COVID-19 in three years, but the real statistics are much higher.

"We are certainly in a much better position now ... The improvement is significant. I am confident that at some point this year we will be able to say that COVID-19 is over both as a public health emergency of international importance and as a pandemic," the WHO director general said.

He stressed that humanity, for the sake of overall safety, needs to learn the lessons learned from the existence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

"If we don't, we will repeat the cycle of panic and neglect that has been the hallmark of the global response to epidemics and pandemics for decades," Gebreisus explained.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL:

- Earlier, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended that COVID-19 vaccination be made annually.

- The WHO said that around 90% of the world's population already has some immunity to the coronavirus.

- Medics believe the new SARS-CoV-2 "Kraken" subspecies is transmitted faster than other "corona" variants. There is no evidence that it is more severely transmitted or associated with a higher risk of death.
