The pro-Russian politician Yurii Boiko, who recently spouted nonsense about the alleged "rampage of radicals in Ukraine" and the "oppression" of the Russian language and the Russian Orthodox Church, has provoked a great deal of outcry among Ukrainians. The public is outraged that Boiko is still at large, despite being an MP and a Hero of Ukraine, and the military is threatening to leave the service if the state does not deal with such figures.

In particular, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, reminded Boiko who is responsible for the violence in Ukraine and the destruction of churches by the Russian occupiers. According to Stefanchuk, it is the aggressor country of Russia that is guilty of crimes against Ukrainians.

"We cannot talk about the ban on going to church without mentioning the destruction of more than 500 churches of various denominations by the Russians. We cannot talk about the desecration of monuments without mentioning the head of the Shevchenko monument in Borodianka, which was shot by Russian looters. And in general, one cannot talk about any violence against people without mentioning Putin, who is the only one to blame for all this," Stefanchuk wrote on Facebook.

On December 16, Deputy Speaker Olena Kondratiuk said that the Rada might consider the pro-Russian narratives voiced by Boiko at a conciliation board. She linked them to the upcoming elections.

"The issue of unity is the key to Ukraine's future. Therefore, of course, when we see such expressive statements, it is only evidence that some political forces have smelled the elections. And this, in my opinion, is very shameful..." Kondratiuk told reporters.

According to her, Boiko's actions "require a politically adequate response" and, "of course, each of us as a citizen" will assess them.

The military also responded to the former Party of Regions member's scandalous statements. Junior sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksii Tsymbaliuk promised to stop serving if the Security Service of Ukraine does not deal with Boiko's pro-Russian activities.

"I am not a public figure, not an opinion leader, not a guy who holds a section of the front. I am just an ordinary junior sergeant whose presence or absence at the front will not change anything. But if the SSU doesn't pack up Boiko in the next few days, I'm going home. Not to the Unauthorized Abandonment of a Military Unit, but I will become a deserter... It's just that if the state doesn't want to defend itself, then I don't give a f*ck about defending it," the military said.

Ukrainian blogger Vadym Labas pointed out that the root of the problem is not Boiko, but the audience for which his narratives are designed. After all, it can lead pro-Russian forces to the next parliament:

"The problem is not Boiko. With a high degree of probability, after the next presidential election, he will either run away or go to jail. But the real problem is those 'citizens' who will vote for him. You don't think that all those supporters of the Muscovite Patriarchate and separatists with a dream of living in the USSR have disappeared. They are all there, they will all go to vote. And, unfortunately, they are more than 5%, which will bring pro-Russian forces to the next Rada."

The country will not be able to solve the problem with these citizens because they are "protected by the Constitution," the blogger writes.

"The only possible struggle is to reduce the percentage of 'citizens' who want to vote for such boycotts. And Boiko, no matter how wicked he is, is living out his last days in Ukrainian politics. Because the "radicals" he is so afraid of are coming. And no one will bargain with him after the next election," Vadym Labas believes.

Vitalii Shabunin, head of the Anti-Corruption Action Center, accused law enforcement officials of allowing Boiko to spread Russian propaganda with impunity and recalled the scandal over the purchase of gas drilling platforms off the coast of Crimea, known as "Boiko towers."

"Boiko is only free because eight post-Maidan prosecutors general failed to imprison him for the "Boiko towers." Eight prosecutors general – from two presidents – in ten years – failed to put the devil, whose corruption was described in detail in "Dzerkalo Tyzhnia" by Yurii Nikolov and Oleksa Shalaiskyi back in 2011, to jail!"

According to Shabunin, the Russian intelligence service "has always used incompetent and greedy 'law enforcement officers'" and top corrupt officials, "like incompetent security officials," are no less dangerous an enemy than Russia and always its "reliable ally."

"Thanks to the SSU, Yurii Boiko is already in jail, and then he will be in prison. Oh, wait, he's still an MP, a hero of Ukraine, and he's recording videos against Ukraine again while sitting in Kyiv," blogger Ihor Lachenkov responded.

Boiko's statements contain pro-Russian rhetoric, noted Ukrainian journalist Volodymyr Zolkin.

"However, nowhere is it spelled out that such rhetoric can be imprisoned. If the law on denial of Russian aggression had been adopted in 2014, Boiko would already be in jail," he said on his YouTube channel.

He also called Boiko's statements "manipulatively presented information that fuels panic in society."

In the same broadcast, journalist Vadym Severyn recalled Boiko's appearances on Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov and the former Party of Regions member's words that he could not call dictator Vladimir Putin a murderer, said at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

As OBOZ.UA wrote, on December 15, Anatolii Shtefan, an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, drew attention to Boiko's scandalous attack. In his video message, the ex-associate of Viktor Yanukovych said that "radicals" in Ukraine allegedly "mock people." The "violence" allegedly consists of the demolition of Soviet monuments and the decommunization of street and settlement names.
