The city of Dnipro has stripped Leonid Brezhnev, former general secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, of the title of "Honorary Citizen of the City." This decision was made by members of the city council at the last session of this year, which took place on December 20.

This was announced by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov on Facebook. He assured that the city would complete decommunization.

"Leonid Brezhnev was stripped of the title of 'Honorary Citizen of Dnipro'. Because we will also bring the decommunization of the city to an end. No matter what anyone says," Filatov wrote.

It should be noted that Leonid Brezhnev was born in 1907 in Kamianske in the Dnipro region, and after the end of World War II, he was the first secretary of the Dnipro regional and city committees of the Communist Party of Ukraine for several years.

According to Dnipro historian Ihor Kochergin, a doctor of historical sciences, Brezhnev did not implement any important projects for Dnipro. The historian also emphasizes that it was under Brezhnev's rule that the policy of Russification and persecution of dissent continued. Brezhnev is associated with the period of "neo-Stalinism" in the history of the USSR, as he began to restore the "cult of personality."

The historian also pointed out that Brezhnev was directly involved in the Holodomor, as he was an active participant in collectivization and led grain procurement campaigns in the Dnipro region in 1932, which resulted in the Holodomor.

As OBOZ.UA reported, in September 2022, Schmidt Street was renamed Stepan Bandera Street in Dnipro. The decision was made by deputies at a session of the city council.
