Hasidim continue to come to Uman

Hasidic pilgrims are arriving in Ukraine to celebrate the New Year according to the Jewish calendar. Currently, more than 32,000 Hasidim are in Uman, where the grave of Tzadik Nachman is located, and almost 11,000 pilgrims crossed the Ukrainian border over the past day alone.

This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. During the celebration of Rosh Hashanah in Uman, a number of restrictions have been introduced to ensure the safety of both pilgrims and local residents under martial law.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of Hasidic pilgrims in Uman exceeded 30,000 on the morning of September 15.

"As of 08:00 on September 15, 32,332 Hasidic pilgrims arrived in the city of Uman. During the day, 10 thousand 88 pilgrims crossed the state border at checkpoints. Law enforcement officers deployed checkpoints in Uman to thoroughly screen and register pilgrims. In the places of mass gathering of pilgrims, 7 posts are on duty around the clock," the statement reads.

This year, as in previous years, the Hasidim of Bratslav are traveling to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. This year they will celebrate the new year 5,784 according to the Jewish calendar from September 15 to 17. The pilgrims will take part in religious events at the grave of Tzadik Nachman and in the synagogues of Uman.

To ensure security during the Rosh Hashanah celebration, a dog unit of the State Emergency Service has been engaged to patrol the streets of Uman. The dog handlers will use sniffer dogs to search for suspicious objects, as well as control and restrict access to certain areas where large groups of pilgrims may gather.

"In order to ensure safety, rescuers are constantly conducting outreach to pilgrims. The SES employees emphasize to the pilgrims the importance of observing safety rules in public places and at festive events. They explain how to avoid a fire and how to properly evacuate a building in case of an emergency," the SES explained.

A number of restrictions have been imposed on the second Hasidic pilgrimage to Uman to celebrate the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah during the full-scale war.

According to the police of the Cherkasy region, from September 11 to 21, a special regime of entry and exit and movement of citizens in the city will be established in Uman. Entry to Uman will be prohibited on three highways, and checkpoints will be set up on the others.

According to the city authorities, entry from the roads will be prohibited:

  • M-30 Stryi - Ternopil - Kropyvnytskyi - Znamianka - Luhansk - Izvaryne to Uman on Derevianka Street (the base of the Standard Construction LLC);
  • entrance from the road M-30 Stryi - Ternopil - Kropyvnytskyi - Znamianka - Luhansk - Izvaryne to Uman on Kashtanova Street;
  • entrance from the village of Rodnykivka to Uman on Pavlova Street.

Vehicular traffic was also introduced with enhanced control at the entrance from the M-05 Kyiv-Odesa highway to the city of Uman, on Vyzvolyteliv Street, for entry only by Hasidic pilgrims.

Law enforcement also restricted traffic in the pilgrimage neighborhood for this period. The sale and use of pyrotechnics and other explosives that create a noise effect, as well as air guns and toys that imitate weapons, is also prohibited.

At the same time, there is a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages and alcohol-based substances (except for medicines authorized for use and included in the State Register of Medicines and disinfectants). These bans will remain in effect until September 22.

Earlier it was reported that, according to Israeli estimates, about 50 thousand Hasidic pilgrims may arrive in Uman. At the same time, the bomb shelters at the pilgrimage sites in Uman can only accommodate about 11 thousand people. Under these conditions, given the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation and the constant threat of missile strikes by Iranian drones, this year's pilgrimage will be accompanied by high security risks.
