Ukraine establishes location and names of prisoners handed over by Russia to Hungary
Ukraine has established the whereabouts and names of the prisoners handed over by Russia to Hungary. The information has already been passed on to their relatives and the relevant law enforcement agencies.
Until they return to Ukraine, they continue to be registered as missing under special circumstances in a special register. This was reported by the Commissioner for Missing Persons Oleg Kotenko.
"Thanks to the coordinated work of the Commissioner's team, it was established that 11 defenders of Ukraine, who were held as prisoners of war by the aggressor country, are currently in Hungary. The names of our heroes, the route of their transfer to Hungary have been established, their relatives and the relevant law enforcement agencies have been notified," he said.
On June 8, the Russian Orthodox Church said that it had handed over 11 Ukrainian prisoners of war of Transcarpathian origin to Hungary without the consent of Ukraine. They said that the transfer allegedly took place at the request of the Hungarian side.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that the Ukrainian government had not been informed about the negotiations between the Hungarian and Russian sides on the release of captured Ukrainian soldiers. The ministry summoned Hungary's charge d'affaires to explain the situation.
At the same time, Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén confirmed the ROC's statement. He refused to give details, citing "the interests of the case and the people". The official noted that this was a gesture of the Russian Orthodox Church towards Hungary, and that the people in question "owe it their freedom".
But after that, the Hungarian government denied the transfer of eleven Ukrainian soldiers held captive by the aggressor country of Russia. They stated that it could have been an initiative of Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén, which other officials were not aware of.
