Representatives of the European Union, Ukrainian authorities and environmental activists discussed threats to the environment from Russian crimes, in particular the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. They assessed the consequences of the war on the environment - both existing and future, and intend to develop recommendations for punishing the aggressor state for environmental crimes.

This is reported by a correspondent of OBOZREVATEL. The event was attended by a special guest, Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg.

"Ukrainians are on the first line, who suffer from war, hunger. It's time for us to put a stop to this. The crimes that Russia is committing in Ukraine cannot be ignored. We must hold Russia accountable for the crimes," the well-known Swedish activist stressed.

Ukraine was represented at the event by Andriy Yermak, head of the Presidential Office. He noted that eliminating the consequences of the eco-catastrophe is an obligatory part of the Peace Formula for Ukraine, presented earlier by President Zelensky.

"The task for us and our international partners is to assess all the damage, develop mechanisms to hold the Russian Federation accountable for all the crimes, restore infrastructure, and a mechanism to prevent similar disasters in the future," he stressed.

Former Swedish Vice Prime Minister and former European Commissioner for the Environment Margot Wallström also took part in the discussion of threats to the environment from Russia's actions. Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former head of the International Institute for Environment and Development.

"We are surprised at what has already been done for nature. We want to show our support and solidarity with Ukraine. That is why we are here and we will not stop until Russia leaves Ukraine and until the Kremlin is accountable for all crimes," Wallström stressed at the end of the meeting.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, Thunberg took part in a rally in front of the UN building in Bonn, Germany, which was held to draw even more attention to Russia's crimes in Ukraine. She mocked the UN's role in the aftermath of the bombing of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant by Russian troops, which led to the greatest man-made disaster of recent decades.
