On November 3, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, arrived in Kyiv on an official visit. She held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

She is also scheduled to speak at the Supreme Court of Ukraine. MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced the arrival of the distinguished guest. She said that she arrived in Kyiv to discuss Ukraine's accession to the European Union, EU funding for Ukraine's reconstruction, and how to make Russia pay for its aggression.

" President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv today. We are waiting for her speech in the parliament," Zheleznyak wrote.

Von der Leyen was personally greeted at the Central Railway Station in Kyiv by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A photo of the two politicians walking down the platform appeared on the European Commission President's profile on the X network, formerly known as Twitter.

She also told us why she came to Kyiv.

"It is a pleasure to be back in Kyiv on my sixth visit since the war. I am here to discuss Ukraine's EU accession path, EU financial support for Ukraine's rebuilding as a modern, prosperous democracy, and how we will continue to make Russia pay for its war of aggression," von der Leyen captioned the photo.

On the eve of the European Commission President's visit, MP Oleksiy Honcharenko, a member of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, said that von der Leyen would bring "positive news" about Ukraine's integration into the European Union.

"During this visit, she announced that the European Commission has given a positive opinion on starting negotiations. This is called the "opening of accession negotiations," Honcharenko said.

Instead, some media outlets, citing sources in the Ukrainian government, noted that the visit should not be expected to result in an announcement of the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

"It's too early to talk about EU accession negotitations. First, there should be a positive assessment of the implementation of the recommendations. But this will also happen not tomorrow, but next week. And tomorrow there should be some optimistic signal," the media quoted the source as saying the day before.

In late October, the President of the European Commission said that the EU was preparing a strong blow to Russia's revenues. The 12th package of sanctions may include restrictions against Russian diamonds, which should hit Russia hard, as it is the world's largest supplier of small diamonds.

At the same time, von der Leyen noted that "Russia must pay for the long-term recovery of Ukraine." To this end, she said, the EU held a discussion on the frozen Russian assets worth 211 billion euros in the territories of the EU member states.
