On Friday, February 16, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Germany on an official visit. There he held talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during which the parties signed a bilateral security agreement.

This is reported by Der Spiegel, which has been following Zelenskyy's visit since his plane landed in Berlin in the morning. The President's Office published the first photos, and the signing of the security agreement was announced by the President's spokesman, Serhiy Nikiforov.

At around 1 p.m. Kyiv time, the President's spokesman said that the ceremony of signing the "Agreement on Security Cooperation between Ukraine and the Federal Republic of Germany" by President Zelenskyy and Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz had taken place.

The Federal Chancellor of Germany also commented on the signing of the agreement. He emphasized that his country would support Ukraine for as long as "necessary."

"Today, President Zelenskyy and I signed an agreement on our long-term security commitments. A historic step. Germany will continue to support Ukraine against Russia's war of aggression," Scholz wrote on his profile on the X network.

After signing the agreement, Zelenskyy revealed some details about its content, calling it "unprecedented."

"An unprecedented document that secures German support for Ukraine at the level of more than 7 billion euros for this year. These are weapons for which there are already specific contracts. The agreement sets out Germany's clear position on sanctions against the aggressor, the tribunal, and frozen assets. The agreement also provides for the mechanism of emergency consultations in case of a possible future armed attack of Russia on Ukraine," the President noted.

The Head of State also thanked Germany and the German people for their solidarity with Ukraine and Ukrainians, as well as for all the support and assistance that this European state has provided, is providing and will provide.

In addition, after his meeting with Zelenskyy, Scholz announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth €1.1 billion.

Official Kyiv had high expectations for the President's two-day foreign visit.

"Two important days are ahead. A new security architecture for Ukraine, new opportunities. We are doing everything to end the war as soon as possible on fair Ukrainian terms and ensure a lasting peace," the Presidential Office said in a statement earlier.

It is noted that during the meeting, Zelenskyy and Scholz will sign an agreement based on the G7 declaration signed by the allies during the NATO summit in Vilnius in the summer of 2023. It could be similar to the security cooperation agreement Ukraine signed with the UK last month.

After talks with the chancellor, the Ukrainian leader will also meet with German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

In addition, during his trip abroad, Zelenskyy will also visit France. In Paris, he and French leader Emmanuel Macron will sign a security agreement between the two countries. On Saturday, February 17, the Ukrainian president is scheduled to speak at the Munich Security Conference.
