Rada deputies appealed to Georgian President to pardon Saakashvili

Members of the Ukrainian parliament have adopted an appeal to Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili demanding to pardon the third president of this state, Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili. The appeal also calls on parliamentarians of the European Union member states to take measures to comply with international human rights standards.

285 deputies voted for the corresponding resolution of the Verkhovna Rada. This was reported by People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

"The Council appealed to the President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili and the parliaments of the EU Member States regarding the need to perform a humanitarian act and pardon the third President of Georgia (2004-2013), a citizen of Ukraine Mikheil Nikolozovych Saakashvili", the MP said.

285 MPs voted in favor of the draft of the 9491 resolution, initiated by a group of MPs, including the head of the "Servant of the People" faction Davyd Arakhamia and the leader of the "Batkivshchyna" party Yulia Tymoshenko. Another 47 MPs registered in the hall did not take part in the voting. None of the MPs voted against the adoption of the appeal or abstained during the voting.

In the resolution supported by the deputies, they called on Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to allow the VRU Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets to visit Saakashvili, who is being held in a Georgian prison. The MPs also ask Zurabishvili to pardon the former Georgian president, taking into account his serious condition and health undermined during his imprisonment.

The appeal notes that Ukraine will defend the rights of its citizens abroad, in particular Saakashvili, who was imprisoned in Georgia.

The MPs argued their appeal with the "critical state of health" of the third president of Georgia, and also reminded the Georgian authorities that they once declared a course for the democratic development of the state and ensuring human rights and, like Ukraine, aspire to become a full member of the EU, where human rights are one of the fundamental values.

However, the MPs interpreted the situation with Saakashvili as a violation of the first part of Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, which states that everyone has the right to a standard of living and well-being, including food, clothing, housing, medical care and necessary social services, which is contrary to the Euro-Atlantic course of the state declared by the Georgian authorities.

The MPs also called on their colleagues from the EU member states to adopt resolutions with similar calls for Zurabishvili to pardon Saakashvili and reaffirm the importance of upholding international human rights standards.

We shall remind you that earlier the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry protested to the Georgian ambassador because of Saakashvili's deteriorating condition and suggested that the diplomat return to Tbilisi. The Ministry also demanded from the Georgian authorities to start negotiations on the transfer of Saakashvili to Ukraine.

Georgia refused to negotiate on Saakashvili and called Ukraine's demands "insulting".

Meanwhile, on July 13, it became known that Polish doctors started examining the former Georgian president. This happened after "six months of delays".

The medical commission was established by the European Union six months ago. However, all this time the Georgian authorities did not give access to the imprisoned politician.
